NEW GUIDELINES ISSUED FOR COVID-19 ISOLATION AND QUARANTINE AND TESTING RECOMMENDATIONS AND OPTIONS

Kirksville, MO 12/29/21 – The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has adopted this week’s new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding isolation and quarantine for COVID-19. Isolation is the action taken by those who test positive for COVID-19. Quarantine is the action taken by those who have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

If you test positive for COVID-19, regardless of vaccine status, you should isolate at home for five days. If you have no symptoms or they are resolving after five days, you can leave your home but continue wearing a mask around other people for another five days. If you have a fever, don’t leave your home until you have not had a fever for at least 24 hours after you stop taking any medication to reduce it.

If you are exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19, you should quarantine based on your vaccination status. If you have been boosted, completed the first series of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines within the past six months or the J&J vaccine in the past two months, you should wear a mask when you are around others for 10 days. The CDC also recommends that you get tested on day five. If you develop any symptoms of COVID-19, get tested and isolate at home using the preceding updated isolation recommendations.

If you are exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19 and you are not vaccinated at all or within the parameters in the previous paragraph, you should quarantine at home for five days and continue wearing a mask around others for another five days after that. If you are unable to quarantine, you should wear a mask around others for 10 days. If you develop any symptoms of COVID-19, get tested and isolate at home per these updated isolation measures.

The CDC continues to recommend that everyone ages five and older get vaccinated and those ages 16 and older get boosted. You should wear masks in public indoor settings, especially where transmission is high, which includes Adair County and all but two counties in the state of Missouri. The CDC also recommends that you get tested prior to gathering with family and friends. Pharmacies and other retailers carry home testing kits you can use before you gather.

Testing continues to be important to tracking transmission of the virus and to identifying positive cases even when someone is unaware they have been exposed to COVID-19 or have no symptoms.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has free home testing kits for Missouri residents who request them. You can order your testing kit online and it will be shipped to you via FedEx. The tests are good for six months. You must activate your kit online, collect samples using the nasal swab, repackage the sample, affix the provided pre-paid shipping label, and place it in a FedEx drop box all on the same day. You should not do this on a Saturday or Sunday or holiday to ensure timely pickup, delivery, and processing of the sample. Once the lab receives the sample, you will be notified by email of your test results within 48 hours.

There are two FedEx drop boxes in Adair County, one in the Bank Midwest vestibule at 201 N. Elson Street and one outside the Baymont by Wyndham hotel at 2702 S. Franklin Street, both in Kirksville. If you are unable to travel to a drop box, you can schedule a pickup by calling 1-800-463-3339. Just be sure to schedule the pickup a day or so in advance of taking samples to make sure pickup will be on the same day. You must use a FedEx drop box or pickup. You cannot ship the return package at a FedEx shipping agent.

ADAIR COUNTY RESIDENTS HAVE RECEIVED $6,750 IN VACCINE INCENTIVE GIFT CARDS TO DATE

Kirksville, MO 12/7/21 – The Adair County Health Department is one of only a handful of health departments statewide that took advantage of a COVID-19 vaccine incentive program funded by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. As of today, gift cards totaling $6,750 have been given to Adair County residents.

“We have had 115 residents take advantage of the incentive to initiate a COVID-19 vaccine as of today,” said Jim LeBaron, administrator of the Adair County Health Department. “They receive a $50 gift card for their first dose and another for their second. We have also given out four $250 gift cards to residents registered in a community drawing for those who received a first or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine from December 2020 through December 31, 2021 at the Adair County Health Department or at a mass vaccination event sponsored by the Health Department at The Crossing in Kirksville,” he said.

The Health Department has seven more pediatric and adult vaccine clinics scheduled in December, so the number of gift cards distributed will increase.

“We encourage everyone ages 5 and older to become fully vaccinated against COVID-19, especially since the Delta variant has proven to be so aggressive and the new Omicron variant has been identified in several states, including Missouri,” LeBaron said. “The gift cards provide a little extra incentive for making an appointment and initiating the vaccine. Plus, the community drawing rewarded those who were already vaccinated by November 1st.”

Qualifying participants may choose gift cards from one of four local retailers, Casey’s, Hy-Vee, Walgreens, and Walmart. Those ages 12 and older who initiate a vaccine at the Health Department after Nov. 1, 2021, will receive a $50 gift card for the first dose and a $50 gift card for the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Those who get their second vaccine after Nov. 1 at the Health Department will receive a $50 gift card for completing the two-dose process. Those ages 5 to 11 who receive the pediatric dose will also receive a gift card. The incentive program does not include those receiving third doses or boosters.

There will also be another community drawing in December. Residents who received a first or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine from December 2020 through December 31, 2021 at the Adair County Health Department or at a mass vaccination event sponsored by the Health Department at The Crossing in Kirksville are eligible to register to win a $250 gift card to their choice of the four local businesses.

Qualified residents who want to register for the drawing should use the “Contact Us” form on the Health Department website. They should include their name, telephone number, and write in the “Message” portion that they wish to be entered in the community drawing.

Qualified residents without internet access can pick up a form from a box outside the Clinic entrance at the Adair County Health Department at 1001 S. Jamison Street. Once completed, they can drop it off inside during office hours, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
