STD stands for sexually transmitted disease. STDs are passed through sexual activity with someone who is infected. Sexual activity can include vaginal, oral, and anal sex. There are a few STDs that can also be passed by skin-to-skin (genital-to-genital) contact. You also may have heard the term STI, which stands for sexually transmitted infection or VD, which stands for venereal disease. All these terms mean pretty much the same thing.
STDs are among the most common contagious diseases. More than 65 million Americans have an incurable STD. Each year, 20 million new cases are reported; half of these infections are among people ages 15 to 24 and they can have long-term consequences. The only way to find out if you have an STD is to get tested.
Samples are sent to an outside lab for testing. Results from testing usually take approximately two weeks.
Testing and exam fees are based on a sliding scale (considering income and family size).
