CDC RECOMMENDS CELEBRATING NEW YEAR’S EVE AT HOME AS ADAIR COUNTY RECORDS 9TH COVID-RELATED DEATH

Kirksville, MO 12/29/20 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that the safest way to celebrate the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 is at home with the people you live with.

As COVID-19 hospitalizations nationwide are a all-time highs, the CDC urges people to stay home to reduce transmission of the virus and celebrate differently:

  • Have virtual celebration with family and friends;
  • Plan a party with the people you live with;
  • Plan a neighborhood countdown to midnight;
  • Watch a livestreamed fireworks display, First Night event, or concert at home.

“Everyone is happy to be putting 2020 behind us and ringing in a new year that we all hope will be better,” said Jim LeBaron, administrator of the Adair County Health Department. “We have a lot to look forward to now that COVID-19 vaccines are being administered. It’s a start, but we’re still seeing far too many cases of the virus and hospitalizations are rising because people refuse to observe the guidelines regarding mask-wearing, social distancing, handwashing, and limited exposure to anyone who lives outside of our household. Now is the time to buckle down, not let up,” LeBaron said. “If we do, we can mark the time needed for widespread vaccine distribution.”

MORE THAN 1,100 COVID-19 VACCINE DOSES ADMINISTERED IN ADAIR COUNTY

Kirksville, MO 12/23/20 – The Adair County Health Department administered more than 1,100 initial doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to Phase 1 target groups in the county. Adair County was one of only 10 counties in the State of Missouri to be provided with the first doses of the vaccine. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services established the phases for administration of the vaccine.

The Adair County Health Department, with assistance from area healthcare partners and first responders, received 975 vials of the vaccine to administer on Monday and today.

“Our goal was to thaw, mix and administer as many doses as possible to Adair County healthcare workers and citizens in the Phase 1 target group,” said Jim LeBaron, administrator of the Adair County Health Department. “Each vial contains more vaccine than needed for a single dose, so we were able to administer some 1,100 doses with this first allotment.”

The Health Department exhausted its vaccine supply at approximately 1 p.m. today. Although 1,100 people received the first of two doses, many Phase 1 workers in line had to leave without the initial dose.

“For a very long time, there will be more people who need and want a COVID-19 vaccine than we have supplies to administer,” said LeBaron. “We are sorry that many people who are Phase 1 targets were unable to be vaccinated today. We did our best to stretch our allotted doses as far as we could under dosage guidelines.”

The Health Department anticipates administering the second Pfizer-BioNTech dose on Jan. 11 and 13, 2021 to those who received a vaccine Monday and today. LeBaron said they hope to receive more doses before the end of January so they can complete the initial injections for all of those in the Phase 1 target group.

“With the FDA approval of the Moderna vaccine and the U.S. government’s agreement to purchase another 100 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, we hope more doses start to become available for distribution,” LeBaron said. “We will continue our efforts to administer the vaccine as quickly as possible to as many people as possible.”

Adair County is one of the 10 counties in the State of Missouri who will receive doses from the state’s initial allotment.

The Health Department has been working to identify targeted workers and contacting them about the vaccine process. Those who will receive the first 975 doses should bring their completed and signed consent forms with them to the drive-through clinic. Anyone who believes they are in the priority target audience but have not received a form should contact the Health Department via the website. When the initial doses run out, healthcare, residential care and essential workers will be placed on a waiting list.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires two doses. The second dose will be administered to these individuals on January 11 and 13.

“We have secured the first dose for 975 people on the front line of the epidemic and anticipate receiving the second dose in early January,” said Jim LeBaron, Health Department administrator. “At this time, we don’t know when or how many doses we will get to begin administering doses to the next priority group of people. CDC guidance states that if people do travel, they should be tested one to two days before leaving and three to five days after. People who don’t get tested should quarantine for 10 days after travel.

“The CDC has issued testing and quarantine guidance about holiday travel,” said Jim LeBaron, administrator of the Adair County Health Department. “But the fact is, the overriding recommendation is that people don’t travel at all and don’t gather with anyone outside of their household unless they can maintain social distance at all times, mask and avoid being inside.”

“No one wants to hear this. But it’s the only way to slow the rapid transmission of COVID-19,” LeBaron said. “And now that we know vaccines are coming, this is a sacrifice everyone can make to help protect their families and friends so they’re all around to gather together next Christmas.”

The Health Department reported Adair County’s third COVID-related death today. ADAIR COUNTY AND KIRKSVILLE REMAIN IN RED ZONE

Kirksville, MO 12/4/20 – This week’s report to the nation’s governors by the White House Coronavirus Task Force still has Missouri, Kirksville and Adair County in the red zone for number of cases per population for the seven-day period from Nov. 21-27.

During that seven-day period, the Adair County Health Department confirmed 87 new cases of the virus. For the current seven-day period, Nov. 28 through today, the Health Department has confirmed 111 cases.

“As high as the confirmed case numbers are for Adair County, we know they’re actually much higher,” said Jim LeBaron, Health Department administrator. “There are hundreds of residents who have or have had COVID-19 but had no symptoms and were never tested. They were, however, infecting others with the virus because they didn’t know they had it. There are people who think they have the virus and call their doctor.

“Physicians often advise patients, based on their symptoms, that they likely have to COVID-19. But they don’t tell them to get tested, just to isolate at home for a period of time based on symptom onset or likely exposure,” he said. “Then, there are the people who live with confirmed cases who can be fairly confident that they have contracted the virus from someone in the household but choose to not get tested.

“How many cases could these situations account for? Probably hundreds since the virus first appeared in Adair County at the end of March,” LeBaron said.

“We know that testing of people without symptoms helps reduce transmission of the virus,” LeBaron said. “There is one last opportunity this year for residents to get a COVID-19 test for free here in Adair County on Monday, Dec. 7, 2020.”
